Two Spanish aid workers have been kidnapped by gunmen in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp. Medecins Sans Frontieres says it’s doing everything possible to secure the safe release of women. This is the third abduction of Westerners in Kenya by attackers linked to Somalia, in one month.
Gunmen kidnapped two Spanish women working for Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF, at Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp on Thursday.
Kenyan police say they suspect Somalia’s al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab insurgents were behind the kidnapping. Security forces have chased the abductors towards the border between the two countries, which has been sealed off.
In a media statement, MSF confirmed the attack but did not give the identity of the two aid workers.
[Raquel Ayora, MSF Director of Operations]:
“Medecins Sans Frontieres confirms that today, Thursday October 3rd , one of our teams suffered a security incident in Dadaab, Kenya. During the incident, the driver was wounded, is hospitalized but stable. Two of our international aid workers, both with Spanish nationality, have been kidnapped.”
Ayora says MSF was doing everything in its power to secure the safe return of the two Spanish aid workers.
[Raquel Ayora, Operational Director, Medicins Sans Frontieres]:
“We energetically condemn this attack. MSF is in contact with the relevant authorities and is doing everything in its hands to assure the quick return of our colleagues.”
The kidnapping took place within weeks of two separate incidents that saw Somali gunmen seize Western female tourists from beach resorts in northern Kenya.
