Social Media and Internet Activism – James North, Greenpeace

If you haven’t heard about how social media is changing the world, then you probably didn’t read the news last year, but is it really true? Malcolm Gladwell launched a very influential polemic against this attitude in the New Yorker in late 2010 shortly before revolutions swept North Africa entitled “The Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted”, with the basic premise that it’s still all about people and not technology. We will look at just how far that is true, how to separate some of the hype from the reality, and then take a look at some tips for using the two most popular social networks – Facebook and Twitter – to engage your current and future supporters and spread awareness about your cause.
