The Depression That Goes Hand In Hand With Activism

Being an activist fighting for racial rights and equality is an extremely difficult and emotionally exhausting battle. It seems efforts are almost futile when in 2015 a grand jury still did not charge a Cleveland policemen for killing Tamir Rice a 12-year-old black child. No matter how many times an activist protests, organizes, and lobbies their battle is never done, and this fact can become quite overwhelming. Especially for MarShawn McCarrel, a Black Lives Matter activist, who took his own on February 8th, 2016. Nothing clearly proves that his activism inspired him to commit suicide, but it did spark activists to speak openly about the anxiety and depression that goes hand-in-hand with their work.
