Women In Northern Ireland Using Drones For Activism

On Tuesday morning a drone carrying the abortion medications mifepristone and misoprostol landed at the picturesque Narrow Waters Castle in Northern Ireland. Once the pills landed, the two women waiting for the medication swallowed it in front of law enforcement authorities, defying what they see as Northern Ireland’s Draconian anti-abortion law. The Telegraph reported that “The maximum penalty for the crime of administering a drug to induce miscarriage under the relevant law—the Offences Against The Person Act 1861—is life imprisonment.” The drones are delivering their medication thanks to the pro-choice group Women on Waves, a reproductive health organization responsible for a similar airdrop in Poland last year. Northern Ireland’s laws are the harshest abortion ban in all of Europe.
